Restoration of the Historic Sunnyside House Completed! The St. Johns Housing Partnership began reconstruction of the historic Sunnyside House in the spring. The SJHP purchased the property in May 2001 with the intention of restoring the building for use as its office. Currently, six employees occupy a 600-square-foot office space. Sunnyside House is the last surviving section of one of St. Augustine's famous hotels pre-dating the era of Henry Flagler. The house originally stood at the corner of King Street and Cordova in downtown St. Augustine on the site of Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel, which is now Flagler College. The building was constructed in 1876 by Captain Thomas F. House, a prominent builder in the St. Augustine Community after the Civil War. After 1885, Flagler bought the lot, divided the Sunnyside House into sections, and moved it to make room for the construction of the Ponce de Leon Hotel. According to historic records, the house was moved to West King Street sometime after 1885. Since the early 1900's the house was home to Moses Demps, Sr., his wife and six children. At least two members of the Demps family served as ministers to the growing African-American community of West Augustine. The Demps family remained active in the West Augustine community for over 80 years. The SJHP staff and volunteers did most of the restoration work. The project took 6-9 months to complete. ReBuild
In March, volunteers with ReBuild from the Board of Realtors and Builders Council, spent a day working in Hastings as the first phase of a large rehab effort organized by the SJHP. The "Extreme Outreach" effort is aimed at helping other families in the Hastings neighborhood who have contacted the Housing Partnership. Volunteer students from Gaines Alternative Center help construct a wheelchair ramp at a home near St. Augustine High School. The Gaines students volunteer once a month on community service projects and have received a national honorable mention for their participation during national Make a Difference Day. Students from the Flagler College Home Team donated their time last year on Make a Difference Day. Funds from the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) funds replaced the roof, plumbing, and wiring.
Below is he home of an elderly woman in West Augustine. With private donations, SHIP funds, and Flagler College volunteers, the house received major repairs, including an exterior paint job. On the right is the same house after repairs and paint.
On last year's Day of Caring for the United Way, SJHP built a ramp for a woman who lives with her elderly mother in Lincolnville, St. Augustine's historic black community. Below are images of the volunteers working on the house.
This home in Hastings needed a wheelchair ramp. Volunteers from Pedro Menendez High School and San Sebastian Middle School (both staff and students) were on hand to lift hammers.
