Duo Hammering Out a Bright Future in SJHP Mentoring Program

Meet our newest team members, Iizek Autry and Clayton Rastrelli—two teens stepping into an industry in urgent need of new skills and fresh talent.

Through a generous private donation, the St. Johns Housing Partnership (SJHP) launched its inaugural mentoring program, offering two full-time positions to learn construction alongside our seasoned craftspeople.

The goal: provide young people with the knowledge, techniques, and confidence to build long, rewarding careers in a trade that will always be necessary.

Iizek and Clayton’s paths share similarities. Both realized while at Pedro Menendez High School that traditional academics didn’t align with their life goals.

Both worked in construction without clear direction—until members of our construction team reached out with this unique opportunity- and they jumped at the chance to join SJHP’s mentoring program.

Now, they’re not only earning a living, but also developing independence and a marketable skill set. Clayton has discovered a love for carpentry, while Iizek is finding his strength in drywall work.

Their mentors, our experienced SJHP staff, guide them through every stage, ensuring they learn the science, technique, and practical skills to succeed in the industry long after their time with SJHP.

The mentoring program is more than just about building homes; it’s about building futures. “I learn something new every day,” Clayton says. “I see different ways of doing things and then find my own way. It’s exciting and challenging, but it feels good.” IIzek agrees: “My friends wish they could be independent like me, but they don’t want to work as hard! It’s tough work, but it feels good to help people and learn something new every day.”

Iizek and Clayton represent what’s possible when we invest in young people and provide real-world opportunities. Their energy, dedication, and drive are proof that the future of construction—and our communities—is in capable hands.
