St. Johns Board of County Commissioners Accept AHAC Report; What’s Next?
ST. AUGUSTINE – The annual review of the St. Johns County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) Annual Report was presented to the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners in December.
The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee reviews established policies and procedures, ordinances, land development regulations, and adopted local government comprehensive plan to recommend specific action or initiatives to encourage or facilitate affordable housing.
The report was accepted by the commission and now will be forwarded to the state. The report deals with a number of vital issues including missing middle housing/density adjustments, impact fees, expedited permitting, public land inventory and incentives.
“The report notes a 13,000 deficit in affordable housing units according to the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and stresses that one single solution will not solve the complex housing crisis in St. Johns County,” noted AHAC Chairman and St. Johns Housing Partnership Executive Director Bill Lazar. “There needs to be a comprehensive, multi-faceted plan that includes zoning reform, targeted incentives, increased public investment and strategic land use to ensure housing is accessible to our workforce.”
As required by Florida State Statute, the St. Johns County AHAC annually reviews established policies, procedures, ordinances, and the County’s Land Development Code, and Comprehensive Plan and make recommendations on strategies to encourage or facilitate the development and/or preservation of affordable housing.
