Job Description: Home Safety Hero’s typically take on two types of projects: light repairs and basic home safety equipment installations.
Light repair projects include: installing or repairing handrails, fixing light switches or fixtures, repairing leaking faucets, and installing weather-strips or other weatherization materials. Light repairs typically require purchasing materials at the hardware store, which RTSF can reimburse for, or you can charge to our accounts.
Home safety equipment installations include: installing grab bars, handheld showerheads, raised toilet seats, shower chairs; and checking smoke detectors. Home safety materials are available from our warehouse in Pier 28.
Projects generally take 1-3 hours each, including the time to get materials at the hardware store. Volunteers generally take on 1-2 projects in a day, with varying schedules during the month depending on your availability. Volunteers can make appointments directly with the clients, so completing projects corresponds with their schedules, or RTSF can set appointments for volunteers with a specific date and time commitments.
Time Commitment: Because this position involves training and a long waiting list of eager seniors, we ask for a minimum commitment as follows:
- Volunteer once a week – 3 months
- Volunteer twice a month – 6 months
- Volunteer once a month – 1 year
If this is a hardship or you have only a certain amount of available time, please talk to the staff and we will find something that works for us both!
Qualifications:
- We ask that you be relatively comfortable with basic tools (drill, hammer, etc.).
- We also require a background check, as you will be working with a vulnerable population.
- You need to transport yourself to and from the job sites.
- We provide tools and materials unless you’re partial to your own.
- We’re looking for patient, open-minded, and conscientious individuals.
